Solfege Ear Training

Solfege (Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do) is one of the oldest and most effective systems for developing relative pitch. By assigning a syllable to each note of the scale, you create a powerful mental map of harmony.

Movable Do vs Fixed Do

In Fixed Do, "Do" is always the note C. This trains absolute pitch memory.

In Movable Do, "Do" is the root note of whatever key you are in. This trains relative pitch and functional harmony, which is vastly more useful for most musicians.

How to practice Solfege here

BananaTone doesn't use solfege syllables on the buttons, but you can still use the method! Open the Intervals mode and select "Diatonic intervals".

When you hear an interval, sing the solfege out loud before you click:

The power of singing

The secret to solfege is that you MUST sing it. Singing forces your brain to internalize the pitch before it comes out of your mouth. Use BananaTone as your prompt, sing the solfege response, and then click to verify.
