Scale Recognition Practice

Scales are the alphabet of melodies. Being able to hear a scale and instantly know if it is Major, Minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian is a superpower for improvisers and producers.

Hearing the "Flavor"

You don't recognize scales by analyzing every single note. You recognize them by their overall emotional "flavor" or "vibe."

Focusing on the Differences

When practicing, group similar scales together and listen for the ONE note that makes them different.

For example, Natural Minor and Dorian are identical except for the 6th note. Set BananaTone to play only those two scales, and train your ear to wait for that specific 6th note to reveal the answer.

Why this helps improvisation

When you're jamming with a band, if you can hear that the backing track is using a Mixolydian flavor, you instantly know which notes you are allowed to play in your solo without clashing.
