Relative Pitch Ear Training
Relative pitch is the ability to identify a note or chord by comparing it to a reference pitch. It is the most practical, learnable, and essential skill for any musician.
Relative Pitch vs Perfect Pitch
While perfect pitch (identifying a note in isolation) is rare and hard to learn as an adult, relative pitch can be mastered by anyone.
With relative pitch, you use a reference note (like a key center or a root note) to measure the distance to the next note. It's like using a map instead of a compass — once you know where "home" is, you can find anything.
How to develop relative pitch
- Master Intervals: Intervals are the measuring sticks of relative pitch. Learn the sound of every distance, from a minor 2nd to an octave.
- Sing Everything: Your voice connects your brain to your ears. If you can sing an interval, you have internalized it.
- Transcribe: Figure out simple melodies from the radio using your instrument.
Why it makes you a better musician
Musicians with strong relative pitch don't just "guess" when they improvise or learn songs. They can predict exactly how a note will sound before they even touch their instrument. It turns playing music from a mechanical exercise into a fluent language.
