Pitch Matching Exercises

Pitch matching is the most fundamental aural skill. It is the ability to hear a note and accurately reproduce it with your voice or instrument. Without it, all other ear training is impossible.

Why pitch matching matters

If you can't match a pitch, you will always sing flat or sharp. The good news is that "tone deafness" (amusia) is extremely rare. Almost anyone who struggles with pitch matching simply hasn't trained the neural connection between their ear and their vocal cords.

The Active Practice Method

Use BananaTone's Note Recognition mode, but don't just click the answers!

  1. Play the note.
  2. Hum or sing the note out loud. Adjust your voice until you feel it "lock in" and vibrate smoothly with the piano sound.
  3. Only after you have matched it, guess the note name.

Start Small

Don't use all 12 notes at first. Select the "Beginner" preset (C, D, E, G, A) to limit the options. Focus purely on hitting the pitch accurately with your voice before worrying about naming it.
