Lydian Mode Ear Training

If the major scale is happy, the Lydian mode is magical. It is considered the brightest of all the modes, featuring a raised 4th degree that creates a sense of wonder, space, and floating.

What is the Lydian mode?

Lydian is the 4th mode of the major scale. Playing all white keys from F to F gives you F Lydian.

It is identical to a standard major scale, but the 4th note is raised by a half-step (sharp 4 / augmented 4th). This removes the half-step clash that normally exists in the major scale, creating an incredibly open sound.

The cinematic sound

Film composers love Lydian because it sounds heroic, futuristic, and full of wonder. The themes from E.T., The Simpsons, and Back to the Future all feature prominent Lydian melodies.

How to distinguish it

Listen for a scale that sounds like Major, but has an unexpected, slightly tense "lift" right in the middle (the sharp 4th). It often feels like the scale is floating upwards rather than resting solidly on the ground.
