Ear Training for Guitar Players
Why guitarists need ear training
Many guitarists fall into the "shape trap" — relying entirely on visual scale patterns and chord boxes without actually hearing the notes they are playing. Ear training breaks you out of this box.
By learning to recognize intervals, you'll be able to hear a solo on Spotify and immediately know which string and fret to jump to.
The best practice method for guitar
Start with Interval Training. Because the guitar fretboard is laid out in semitones, intervals translate directly to fret distances:
- Minor 2nd = 1 fret
- Major 2nd = 2 frets
- Minor 3rd = 3 frets
- Perfect 4th = adjacent string (usually)
Why practice with piano sounds?
BananaTone uses piano samples. Why is this good for guitarists? Because it builds pure relative pitch. If you only practice with guitar sounds, you might rely on timbre or string noise rather than actual pitch. Mastering intervals on a piano guarantees you truly know the sound.
