Ear Training for Beginners
Starting ear training can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. By breaking down sounds into small, recognizable pieces, anyone can learn to play by ear.
Why start ear training?
Ear training is the bridge between hearing a song in your head and playing it on your instrument. It allows you to:
- Learn songs by ear without needing sheet music or tabs.
- Improvise freely by translating the melodies in your mind to your fingers.
- Understand the emotional structure of the music you love.
The beginner's approach
The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to learn everything at once. The secret is to start small:
- Limit the options: Practice with just two or three intervals or chords at a time.
- Use a reference: Always relate sounds to songs you already know.
- Be consistent: 5 minutes a day is much better than an hour once a week.
Where to begin right now
Start with our Beginner Intervals preset. This limits the options to the most distinct and fundamental sounds: the Minor 3rd, Major 3rd, Perfect 5th, and Octave.
Once you can reliably score 90% or higher, gradually add one new interval at a time.
