Ear Training for Bass Players
Hearing the Root Movement
As a bassist, your primary job is often playing the root of the chord. To learn songs by ear quickly, you must be able to track root movement.
The most common root movements in modern music are Perfect 4ths and Perfect 5ths. Master recognizing these two intervals, and you will be able to map out most pop and rock songs instantly.
Recognizing Chord Qualities
Even if you're only playing one note, you need to know the quality of the chord the band is playing (Major, Minor, Dominant) so you can choose the correct passing notes.
Use BananaTone's Chord Trainer to practice identifying the emotional color of chords, so you always know whether to walk up using a major 3rd or a minor 3rd.
