C Major Notes Ear Training
Starting your note recognition journey with the C major scale (all white keys: C, D, E, F, G, A, B) is the smartest approach. These seven natural notes form the foundation of Western music theory.
Why start with C major?
C major is the simplest key — no sharps, no flats. By focusing on just these seven notes, you can:
- Build a strong mental "map" of the most common pitches.
- Learn the character of each natural note without the confusion of accidentals.
- Develop patterns that transfer to other keys later.
Character of each note
Each note in C major has a subtle personality:
- C: Home base. Stable, neutral, resolved.
- D: Slightly bright, forward-moving.
- E: Sweet, warm, the "happy" note (major third of C).
- F: Gentle tension, wants to resolve down to E.
- G: Strong, dominant, powerful.
- A: Warm, mellow (relative minor root).
- B: Tense, leading tone — desperately wants to resolve up to C.
Practice progression
- Week 1-2: Start with just C, E, G (the major triad). Get these three rock solid.
- Week 3-4: Add D and A. Now you have five notes (the Beginner preset).
- Week 5+: Add F and B for the complete C major scale.
- Later: Add sharps and flats when you're ready for the Challenge preset.
